Progress Seen on White Rock Fire Despite High Winds

Panaca, Nev. – Despite peak wind gusts clocked at 30 mph, firefighters made progress yesterday suppressing the White Rock Fire.  Sustained 40 mph winds grounded most aerial suppression resources out of Cedar City, but SEATs and helicopters from Panaca, Mesquite and Spring Valley were able to reduce threat of spot fires as firefighters on the ground continued securing the fire perimeter.

The 6,925-acre fire straddling the Nevada-Utah border is currently 40 percent contained with full containment expected June 10.

“Although we saw some growth in the northeast portion of the fire, suppression resources were strategically placed and we were able to get a line around the most of the perimeter last night,” said Incident Commander John Kidd.

Current suppression resources include 12 crews, seven helicopters, four engines, three dozers and three water tenders.  Today’s efforts by the 342 people assigned to the fire will focus securing the north and east perimeter and mopping up on the south and west fire perimeter.

The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain dominated by pinion-pine and juniper trees, sagebrush and grass.  The fire is creeping and smoldering with hotspots in pinion-juniper.
