Hike/Bike at new outdoor recreation area
ELKO, Nev. - As part of the national “Let’s Move Outside!” campaign, the Bureau of Land Management is teaming up with Nevada State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Nevada Division of Forestry to host the Grand Opening of the South Meadow Wildlife Management Area, Saturday, June 16 beginning at 9 a.m.
There will be light refreshments, courtesy of Cedar Creek Clothing, along with activities for young and old alike sponsored by the Northeastern Nevada Stewardship Group.
The South Meadow Wildlife Management Area is managed as wildlife habitat in conjunction with Nevada Department of Wildlife. This area was selected due to existing wet meadows and shallow marshes and overall favorable conditions for large and small game habitat, waterfowl nesting areas, migratory staging and harvesting and fish spawning areas. Currently, this area offers multi-use trails providing quality opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. This will be the location of this year’s National Public Lands Day on Sept. 29.
The South Meadow Wildlife Management Area, part of the South Fork State Recreation Area, is located seven miles south of Elko on State Route 227, 5.5 miles south on State Route 228 and 3.5 miles southwest on Lower South Fork Road. It is 2.25 miles past the park ranger station on Lower South Fork Road.
The event is a continuation of monthly events designed at promoting physical fitness and the many activities available on your public lands. Other events will be scheduled throughout the summer at various public land areas. Activities will be posted to the BLM website at www.blm.gov/rv5c or the Forest Service's website at www.fs.usda.gov/main/htnf/home.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
