Nevada Interagency Wildland Fire Rookie Training To Be Held In Austin, Nevada

Battle Mountain, Nev. - The Nevada Interagency Wildland Fire Rookie Training academy will be held at the Austin High School, in Austin, Nev., June 10 through 15. “Austin is centrally located within the state,” said Barry Burt, Rookie School Coordinator. The proximity of areas suited for field exercises make the Austin High school an ideal location for conducting this training.”

The Nevada Interagency Wildland Fire Rookie School is conducted every year and provides training for first year wildland firefighters. The academy combines class and field exercises to provide the training required to work as a wildlland firefighter with any state or federal agency. Class exercises include S-130, Basic Wildland Firefighting, and S-190, Introduction to Fire behavior, among others. The field exercises include pump and hose lay use, basic firefighting tool use and care, working around engines and power saws, and a mock fire exercise.

The academy hosts agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Nevada Department of Forestry, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs and some volunteer fire departments. The usual academy size is about 100 students and 20 instructors from all around the state.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
