BLM to Host February 16 Open House for Transportation Planning at Red Rock


Las Vegas - The Bureau of Land Management, Red Rock/Sloan Field Office will hold an open house on Thursday, February 16 to encourage public participation in a transportation planning effort to reduce vehicle congestion on the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area 13-Mile Scenic Drive and parking lots.  The BLM is seeking feedback on individual strategies from the Transportation Feasibility Study and suggestions for analysis in the upcoming environmental assessment.
 
The open house will be held from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, with short presentations and roundtable discussions at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. When entering the fee booth at the entrance of the Scenic Drive, participants should tell the attendant that they are attending the public meeting and will not be required to pay the fee.
 
The Transportation Feasibility Study strategies will be available for public comment from February 16 to March 16, at: www.nv.blm.gov/vegas. This open house is part of a series the third Thursday of each month to give the public an opportunity to meet BLM staff, get information about projects and planning, and ask questions about the management of Red Rock and Sloan Canyon National Conservation Areas and Walking Box Ranch.



The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
