Join the BLM and learn outdoor skills!
ELKO, Nev. – Take It Outside! and join the Elko District Bureau of Land Management for a free clinic on surviving and enjoying adventures on your public lands at the Tabor Creek campground located approximately 30 miles north-northwest of Deeth, Nev. this Saturday, Aug. 18 beginning at 10 a.m.
Recreation interns, Steve Townley and Andrew McDonald, will host a day of learning about skills, gear and techniques used in popular outdoor activities. Experienced outdoor recreation educators will review basic as well as advanced information on hiking, biking, camping and backpacking in the rugged Nevada outback. After basic lessons, there will be a guided hike on trails in the area.
The Tabor Creek campground has 14 developed campsites with tables and fire rings. There are restroom facilities and camping fees are $2 a night. There is no potable water, but creek water can be boiled or purified. Directions: from Interstate 80, take the Deeth exit. Follow O’Niel-Deeth county road north 26 miles to Tabor Creek. The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) "Take It Outside" program promotes and supports outdoor activities and experiences of children on the public lands. The program strives to improve the health of our nation's children, families and communities, while at the same time developing the next generation of public land stewards. The Elko District Office strives to offer one activity a month at different locations throughout the District.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
