Statement on Private Land Use

Visitors to the Tri-State Calico Complex Wild Horse and Burro gather are welcome and encouraged to watch gather operations every day at gather sites on public land. The gathered animals are moved to temporary holding corrals, where they typically spend a night before being transported to short-term holding facilities such as the Palomino Valley Center in Reno or the Indian Lakes Road Facility in Fallon. Some animals, mares to receive fertility control vaccine or stallions that will be returned to the range, may stay an additional day or two at temporary holding.

The temporary holding corrals are located on private land for the duration of the gather. This location was selected because its existing corals and better access to water and improved roads. The temporary corrals are located about 100 feet from Humboldt County Road (Knott Creek) and are visible from the road. The private land owner has agreed to allow members of the public access to the temporary holding corrals each Saturday.

For updated information on meeting times for the gather, please call 775-623-1728. The Winnemucca District Office, 5100 East Winnemucca Blvd, will be the meeting place. Visitors are escorted to the gather site scheduled for that day.
