Statement regarding horse that got stuck in trailer panel, number of horses in trailer and helicopter distance from horses – Jan. 4, 2012

The horse that got its leg caught in a panel of the trailer as it was being loaded is being monitored and although the leg is sore, there are no cuts on the leg and we will continue to monitor the horse’s health closely.

A trailer normally holds 13 horses comfortably, and in this case, there were 12 in the trailer.

Pictures or video taken from the observation site at the gather can appear as if the helicopter is much closer to animals than it really is because distance is distorted through the lens of a camera and at a distance. The COR, or BLM staff in charge of the gather activities implemented by the contractor, is on the ground daily right at the trap and determined the helicopter was not too close to the horses. Additionally, wild horses in the Warm Springs, Black Rock East and Black Rock West Herd Management Areas have historically been difficult to gather in the past, and this week proved to be no exception.

Update as of Jan. 20, 2011- The animal is doing well and was shipped to Palomino Valley Center.

About the Tri-State Calico Wild Horse and Burro Gather

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District, Black Rock Field Office will gather approximately 1,300 wild horses and 140 wild burros, of which as many as 350 wild horses would be released back to the range following the gather. The gather area is located northeast of Gerlach, Nev., within Humboldt and Washoe counties.

Of the wild horses released back to the range, approximately 85 to 115  mares would receive a 22-month Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP-22) immunocontraceptive vaccine treatment and 235 to 265 stallions would be released due to sex ratio adjustments (60 percent male/40 percent female). The goal of the fertility treatments and sex ratio adjustments is to slow population growth and maintain population size within the appropriate management level, and extend the time before a gather to remove excess wild horses would be needed.

The BLM estimates there are currently 1,602 wild horses within the Complex and 179 wild burros. The purpose of the gather is to return the wild horse and burro population to within the appropriate management level of 572 to 952 wild horses and 39 to 65 wild burros.

The gather began Nov. 19, 2011 and is expected to take about 40-50 days.

Background

The BLM plans to complete the proposed action and decision made in the Calico Mountains Complex Wild Horse Gather Plan from 2010.  Although the Calico Mountains Complex was gathered in Jan. and Feb. 2010, the overall proposed action was not achieved due to winter conditions and wild horse movement within the tri-state area of Nevada, Oregon, and California, whch necessitates the need for another gather.

Wild horses and burros from the Tri-State Calico Complex would be gathered as a Complex or unit as herds move and interact throughout. The gather is being conducted in conjunction with BLM California’s High Rock Wild Horse Gather, which takes place immediately prior to this gather. This is conducive because both gathers are located within the tri-state area, where wild horse movement between these areas exists. The Complex gather involves areas beyond the HMA boundaries as wild horse and burros have moved outside of HMAs in search of forage, water and space, due to the current over-population of wild horses/burros in these areas.
