Instructions for Visitors to the Owyhee Wild Horse Gather
November – December 2012

When to meet: Call our Wild Horse Gather Info Line at (775) 861-6700 for an update on the next day’s gather activities, meeting times and location, or to leave a message if you plan to visit the gather. Note: Gather operations are dependent on the weather and could change with little or no notice.

Where to meet: Meet BLM personnel at the Winnemucca District Office (directions are below). There will be a short briefing for the day and introductions. We will then caravan out to the gather site of the day and stay until gather operations are completed. We may not know the exact location of these sites until the day before, so please, be flexible.

Transportation: All visitors must have their own transportation – we cannot take people in government vehicles except in an emergency. The temporary holding corrals/sites may move around to several locations and the roads can get very rough in and around the Owyhee Complex area. Vehicles MUST HAVE 4-wheel drive with high clearance. Visitors must have spare tires (we suggest multiple spare tires!). Gas and full services are available in Winnemucca and Elko, Nev.

Due to the distances involved within the Complex and the lack of facilities, extra gas cans are highly recommended. Cell phones are also a good idea if you get stranded, though coverage cannot be guaranteed. We will travel together to and from the gather. Head lights must be on and if any vehicle has mechanical problems and/or flat tires, we all stop

Driving Directions to Winnemucca: From Reno, follow I-80 West and drive approximately 160 miles to Winnemucca. Take exit 178 – NV289 Downtown Winnemucca. Turn right onto 2nd St, then take the 1st left to E. Winnemucca Blvd. The District Office is located a little less than a mile on the right at 5100 E. Winnemucca Blvd.

Weather conditions: This is Nevada in November and December, so plan for cold temperatures, and possible snowy, muddy, wet, windy conditions at the gather site. Dressing in layers is recommended due to highly fluctuating temperatures throughout the day.

Physical Activity: Observation areas might not be accessible by vehicle. Hiking into and out of the observation areas may be strenuous.

Observation Areas: Observation areas are determined to provide the best vantage point while ensuring a safe and effective gather operation. Once areas are determined by contractor and BLM staff, they can not be moved during that day’s gather operations.

What to bring:
• Closed-toed sturdy shoes
• Bland-colored clothing (no bright colors, please)
• Gloves/hats
• Sunscreen
• Food and water
• Binoculars
• Camera with zoom lens
• Toilet Paper/tissue (There are no restroom facilities available)
