Rising almost 2,000 feet above the town of Winnemucca, Water Canyon is one of the premier recreation areas in Northern Nevada.  Managed by the BLM-Winnemucca Field Office, this area offers sites for overnight camping, picnics, hiking, biking and even limited ATV use, all at no charge to visitors.  The BLM has installed campfire rings, grills, trails, shelters and information kiosks all in an effort to improve one of Winnemucca’s closest recreational opportunities.

Plans are even being made this year by a local environmental education group, the Nevada Outdoor School, to install an interpretive trail which will allow visitors to take self-guided tour learning about the local flora and fauna and the canyon’s importance in local history and cultural significance to many different groups in the Winnemucca area.

Mule Deer, Coyotes, Chukar Partridge, California Quail, Mormon Crickets, and many other species can all be found and often viewed while visiting the canyon. In addition to these exciting animals one will also find an exciting variety of plants that survive the harsh desert climate because of the water that flows here year round. Aspen, Cottonwood, Willow, Wild Rose, Sagebrush, and other trees and plants can all be found here making it a great place to relax in the shade and beat the summer heat.
