Winnemucca Fire Operations
The BLM’s Winnemucca District is comprised of nearly 11 million acres of federal land ranging from grass and brush in the valleys to pinyon and juniper forested mountains. Hot and dry weather combined with heavy fuel loads often lead to extreme and dynamic fires during the fire season. Typically, fire season runs from May through early October. On average, the District experiences around 65 fires burning approximately 43,000 acres per year. The Winnemucca Interagency Fire Program consists of 11 engines, 2 water tenders, and 1 dozer that staff BLM stations in Winnemucca, Lovelock, McDermitt, and Gerlach along with a Forest Service station in Paradise Valley. The program utilizes unique equipment including a Tatra Ultra XT engine, a Type III Unimog engine, a light type 6 engine, and numerous heavy engines for fire suppression. Aviation assets hosted on district include Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs), helicopters, smokejumper aircraft and air-attack platforms. The fire program offers many seasonal and career opportunities along with ongoing training for firefighters and fire support staff.
