Winnemucca Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District will continue to accept public comments on the Draft Resource Management Plan (RMP) and associated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for an additional 30 days because of public interest. The BLM published a Notice of Availability of the Draft Winnemucca District RMP/Draft EIS in the Federal Register on June 25, 2010. Release of the Draft document initiated a 90-day public comment period on the land use management alternatives analyzed in the document. The BLM would appreciate receiving substantive comments on the Draft RMP/Draft EIS by October 25. The RMP will replace two outdated Management Framework Plans (MFPs) approved in 1982 and amended in 1999. The new RMP is necessary because the existing MFPs do not satisfactorily address new and emerging resource issues such as landscape health, recreation, access and transportation, visual resource management, lands with wilderness characteristics and sage-grouse habitat. In addition, there have been many changes in laws and regulations. Once approved, the RMP will guide the management of federally-approved activities on approximately 8.4 million acres of BLM-administered public lands and minerals in all of Humboldt and Pershing counties, and portions of Washoe, Churchill and Lyon counties. The BLM developed the alternatives described in the RMP with input from other federal agencies, tribal, state and local governments, the Resource Advisory Council and the general public. The Draft RMP/Draft EIS is available on the Winnemucca District’s web page at www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/wfo/blm_information/rmp.html. Public comments may be submitted via regular mail to: Bob Edwards, Winnemucca District Office, 5100 East Winnemucca Blvd., Winnemucca NV 89445-2921 or via e-mail to wdrmp@blm.gov. E-mail messages should include “Winnemucca RMP, Edwards” in the subject line. Public comments submitted for this project, including names and addresses of commentors will be available for public review at the Winnemucca District Office during regular business hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except federal holidays. For further information and/or to have your name added to the interested party mailing list, contact Bob Edwards, RMP Project Lead, at (775) 623-1500 or by e-mail to robert_edwards@blm.gov. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
