BLM to Gather Excess Wild Horses from the Tobin Range

Winnemucca, Nev. --The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District Humboldt River Field Office, is scheduled to begin gathering up to 430 wild horses and to remove approximately 421 excess wild horses from the Tobin Range Herd Management Area (HMA) beginning October 22, 2009.

The Tobin Range HMA is located 30 to 45 miles southeast of Winnemucca in Pershing and Humboldt counties.

Based on a census conducted this year, about 443 wild horses currently roam the HMA. The purpose of the gather is to reduce the current herd population to the established appropriate management level (AML) of 22 to 42 head and to achieve a natural thriving ecological balance. The number of wild horses remaining in the HMA following the gather will be at least 22 animals.

All wild horses removed will be placed in BLM’s wild horse adoption program. For more information about the BLM’s wild horse adoption program, please visit www.blm.gov.

Note to editors: A media day is scheduled for Saturday, October 24th. Any media interested in attending the gather must contact and coordinate with Lisa Ross at 775-623-1541. Media attending the gather must drive a four-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle. Also, it is recommended to have appropriate clothing for inclement weather and plenty of water and food. Drive time to the gather from Winnemucca is approximately 1 ½ hours one way.

The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
