Docents needed for Water Canyon and Lovelock Cave

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca Field Office, and the Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) are offering a new docent program for Water Canyon (south of Winnemucca) and Lovelock Cave.

A docent is a volunteer who acts as a guide and teacher to offer regular informational tours of a building or area. Docents fulfill an important duty by acting not only as an expert on a certain historical or natural landmark, but also as a steward of that site making sure that the public understands its significance. Docents in the program will lead tours in Water Canyon and Lovelock Cave. These areas make up a large part of the curriculum that the Nevada Outdoor School uses to offer free outdoor education programs to Winnemucca and the surrounding communities. Tours will also be given to the general public on a regular basis as well.

Docents will receive training and can be reimbursed for fuel and other expenses.

If you are interested in becoming a docent or would like more information please contact Peggy McGuckian, Archeologist with BLM, at (775) 623-1500 or Jon Baker and Jacob Brown, Docent Coordinators at NOS, at (775) 623-5656.
