Mojave Max Emergence Contest

Mojave Max is a desert tortoise who lives at the BLM's Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. 
During the last seven years his emergence time and dates were: March 15, 2000; March 19, 2001; March 22, 2002; March 7, 2003; February 19, 2004; February 14, 2005; April 3, 2006, March 26,2007. Link here to see his emergence times.


On the east coast, the ground hog signals the beginning of spring. Here at Red Rock Canyon our own Mojave Max, a desert tortoise, signals the beginning of spring. Clark County school groups can get involved by logging onto www.mojavemax.com beginning in November, and entering a guess as to when Mojave will emerge from his burrow. The Clark County Nevada winner will receive several prizes and a paid trip for their class to visit Red Rock Canyon.

Anyone can make a guess, winners are selected from schools in Clark County, Nevada, Southern California, Southern Utah, and Mojave County, Arizona.
 

 
Are you interested in the annual Mojave Max Emergence Contest?  It started in 2002 and has been growing ever since.  Last year's winner guessed the exact minute when Mojave Max emerged from his hibernating nap. Prizes include t-shirts, pizza parties and special tours of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
 

 

 

 

The program presents interactive lessons in classrooms with trained volunteers from the community, BLM, and participating universities. Everyone has fun--and everyone learns something about the desert ecosystem.
