Location: 40 miles south of Las Vegas, Nevada Terrain: Contained within this unit are the picturesque and rugged Eldorado Mountains. The area is a maze of peaks and side canyons with vertical cliffs extending to the edge of the Colorado River. Much of the terrain was formed by volcanism. Habitat Type: Creosote bush scrub with low-desert shrubs and a variety of cacti. Special Features: • The area contains scenic beauty and some remnants of historic mining. • Water is scarce and the summer temperatures can reach 120+ degrees. • Archeological resources in the area include petroglyphs and lithic scatters. • Bighorn sheep, bobcats, mountain lion, coyotes and jackrabbits inhabit the area. • Reptiles found in the area include side-blotched lizard, rattlesnakes and desert tortoise. |
