LAS VEGAS – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office will hold three public scoping meetings in September to listen to and record comments and questions for the preparation of a supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS), on a First Solar South proposed solar energy project east of Primm, Nev., which includes 13,043 acres of public land managed by the BLM. The public meetings will be held in an open-house format with information available about the proposed solar energy generating facility. The meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sept. 27, 28, and 29 in Nipton, Calif., and Las Vegas, and Jean, Nev.
The BLM published the Notice of Intent in the September 1, Federal Register. This notice advises the public of the preparation of a SEIS, which evaluates any potential impacts that could occur from the construction and operation of the project. Written comments will be accepted until Oct. 31. Comments may be submitted to: BLM Las Vegas Field Office, Attention: Gregory Helseth, 4701 North Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301, by email: SilverStateSouthEIS@blm.gov, or fax 702-515-5023. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
