Las Vegas - Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area’s developed campground -- Red Rock Campground -- is scheduled to temporarily close from June 1 to October 1, 2010 to allow for campground improvements during this low-usage period. The improvements, funded by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, will include installation of concrete pads for picnic tables, shade structures for the individual and group camp sites and relocation of two double vault toilets for the group site area. The improvements are aimed at improving visitor satisfaction and experience. Red Rock Campground is located within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area approximately two miles east of the visitor center on State Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area. The campground has been in service since February 1999 and an estimated 500,000 people have visited the Red Rock Campground since its opening. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many other camping opportunities in the area while this project is underway. These include:
Camping is allowed on BLM land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
