Red Rock Canyon Children's Art Contest Award Ceremony Saturday

Las Vegas – On March 6, winners of the 10th Annual Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Art Contest will be announced at an award ceremony, which will be held at the visitor center from 10 to 11 a.m.

More than 146 entries were received from area sixth to 12th graders showcasing wildlife of Red Rock and the Mojave Desert. The purpose of the art representing Red Rock Canyon or the Mojave Desert is to encourage students to research, learn and get comfortable with the desert environment in which they live.

Awards will be given in black and white and color categories for each grade level. Winners will be displayed at the visitor center from March 6 until May 1. First place winners in category/grade level winners receive a $25 gift certificate to a local art supply store. Best of Show award winners receive a $100 gift certificate to a local art supply store.

Winners were selected by Bureau of Land Management and Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association staff and Loren Purcell from Purcell Studio and Gallery.

The annual contest is sponsored by BLM, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association and Friends of Red Rock Canyon.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
