Prescribed Fire Planned March 9-11 |
Las Vegas – A 30-acre prescribed fire is planned for one day between Tuesday, March 9 and Thursday, March 11 on private and public land in the Gypsum Wash, two miles north of the boundary with Lake Mead National Recreation Area along Lake Mead Boulevard and a half mile southwest of the Pabco Gypsum plant entrance. The purpose of the fire is to cost-effectively remove numerous slash piles of tamarisk, also known as salt cedar, an invasive weedy tree species. This action will reduce wildland fire hazards on both public and adjacent private lands by removal of the slash piles that were created during a previous fuels removal project. The burn unit is approximately one mile from the nearest structure. Risk of fire escape is minimal. Resources on the burn project will consist of two wildland fire engines and overhead personnel. The planned fire will only take place if weather conditions are in accordance with the Prescribed Fire Plan. The area will be closed to public access during the planned fire, however roads will remain open.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
