Walking Box Ranch Museum/Interpretive Center and Field Research and Training Center Environmental Assessment Available for Review


Las Vegas - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Red Rock/Sloan Field Office is proposing to establish a Walking Box Museum/Interpretive Center and Field Research and Training Center at the site of the historic Walking Box Ranch west of Searchlight. The public is being asked for their comments on the plans that were analyzed in a draft environmental assessment released today. Public comment will be accepted through July 18, 2010.

The proposed action allows for the following:

  • rehabilitation of the historic structures
  • development of a museum/interpretive center
  • development of a Field Research and Training Center

Funding for the Walking Box capital improvement project was approved by the Secretary of the Interior in Round 6 of the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, which provided   $18.6 million.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
