Las Vegas – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced the availability of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the Upper Las Vegas Wash Conservation Transfer Area (SEIS) with the publication of a notice in the Federal Register on January 22, 2010. The draft document addresses possible boundary adjustments to the 5,000-acre Conservation Transfer Area in the northwest Las Vegas Valley. Public comments on the draft document will be accepted until March 22, 2010. Public meetings to review and comment on the draft SEIS will be held in mid February. More information will be available once the dates and locations are determined. The Draft SEIS is available at the BLM office and on the website at www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo.html. The Upper Las Vegas Wash is a deep drainage cut by thousands of years of flooding. The area contains significant paleontological, botanical, and cultural resources such as extinct mammoth and sloth fossils. The Las Vegas bearpoppy, Merriam’s bearpoppy, and the Las Vegas buckwheat are three rare plant species found in the Upper Las Vegas Wash, and they are found only in the Mojave Desert. Written comments must be addressed to the Field Manager, Las Vegas Field Office, Bureau of Land Management, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130. For more information, please call Gayle Marrs-Smith, at 702-515-5156. |

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
