LAS VEGAS – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Las Vegas Field Office is seeking public comments on the Upper Las Vegas Wash Conservation Transfer Area Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS). The Upper Las Vegas Wash is a deep drainage cut by thousands of years of flooding. The area contains significant paleontological, botanical, and cultural resources such as extinct mammoth and sloth fossils. Three meetings will be held in February to provide information and record comments. The BLM will accept comments on the Draft SEIS through March 22, 2010. The Draft SEIS describes and analyzes possible boundary adjustments to the Conservation Transfer Area referenced in the 2004 Final Las Vegas Valley Disposal Boundary Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and Record of Decision. The meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on February 22, 23, and 24, in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, and will be in an open house format.
The BLM published the Notice of Availability in the January 22, 2010 Federal Register. This notice advises the public that the draft SEIS is available for public review. The SEIS evaluates paleontological, botanical, hydrological, and cultural resources to establish a final boundary. Copies of the documents may be picked up at the BLM Southern Nevada District Office or downloaded from the BLM web site at www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo.html. Written comments will be accepted until March 22, 2010. Comments may be submitted to: BLM Las Vegas Field Office Manager, 4701 North Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301. For more information, please contact Gayle Marrs-Smith, BLM Project Manager, at 702-515-5156 or by email at gayle_mars-smith@blm.gov. |

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
