BLM Reschedules Public Meeting in Pahrump

LAS VEGAS – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pahrump Field Office has rescheduled a public scoping meeting, in Pahrump February 8, 2010 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East Street to listen to and record comments and questions for the preparation of draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Pacific Solar Investment’s proposal to construct a 7,500-acre photovoltaic power generation project on public land near Big Dune in Amargosa Valley, south of Beatty, Nev.

A meeting scheduled for January 21 was cancelled due to inclement weather. This meeting will be in an open house format with information available about the proposed solar energy generating facility. The BLM published the Notice of Intent in the December 14, 2009 Federal Register, which informed the public of the preparation of an EIS that will evaluate potential impacts that could occur from the construction and operation of the project. These public meetings are the first step in the EIS study process.

Written comments will be accepted until February 12, 2010. Comments may be submitted to: BLM Pahrump Field Office, Attention: Gregory Helseth, 4701 North Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301, by email: NorthSolar_Proj@blm.gov, or Fax 702-515-5023 (fax).

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
