BLM Opens Nominations for Funding from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act
LAS VEGAS--The nomination period for project proposals seeking funding by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) opened on Tues., Sept. 8 and will close Fri., Nov. 6. Nominations for the acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands follow a slightly different process and an earlier deadline of Mon., Oct. 1. This will be Round 11 for expenditures. The SNPLMA Round 10 expenditure package was signed by the Secretary of the Interior at an event at Cottonwood Cove last Friday.
Generally, only governmental agencies may submit nominations.
• Carson City, Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine counties may nominate proposals for parks, trails, and natural areas.
• Federal agencies may nominate proposals for capital improvements, conservation initiatives, and other restoration work specific to southern and eastern Nevada.
• Federal and State agencies and the Nevada Fire Safe Council may seek funding for hazardous fuels reduction in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Carson Range and the Spring Mountains.
• Federal agencies may nominate for acquisition environmentally sensitive land within Nevada.
The requirements for nominating projects and the eligible nominating entities are available at www.blm.gov/snplma, or by calling 702-515-5063. Nominations must be mailed or delivered to the BLM Southern Nevada District Office, SNPLMA Division, 4701 North Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130. Acquisitions of sensitive land nominations require early submittal of a nomination summary and a preliminary title report. The summary form for land acquisitions is available on the SNPLMA website.
The BLM is authorized to retain and distribute proceeds from the sale of land in the Las Vegas Valley under the authority of the SNPLMA, as amended. The next BLM land sale is scheduled for November and will be conducted over the internet.
The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
