BLM Nevada News Las Vegas Field Office 2008-10 FOR RELEASE: July 1, 2008 Contact: Kirsten Cannon (702) 515-5057; kirsten_cannon@blm.gov Mojave Max Dies of Natural Causes Las Vegas – Yesterday, Mojave Max, the approximately 65 year-old-year old male tortoise that resided in a special habitat at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area was confirmed to have died of natural causes. For the past nine years, students were encouraged to estimate the time that he would first exit his burrow after brumation (reptilian form of hibernation.) The successful event had thousands of students in the valley researching species, temperature and cycles of the Mojave Desert. More than 100,000 schoolchildren were introduced to the Mojave Desert Ecosystem though the Clark County Desert Conservation Program, which includes a cartoon version of Max. A successor to Mojave Max will be announced at a later date. -BLM- |
