Trails Workshop Slated for Sloan Canyon

Las Vegas – Bureau of Land Management will host an open house to address Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area trail alternatives on December 9. The meeting will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. at Hampton Inn & Suites Conference Room, 421 Astaire Drive in Henderson.

Sloan Canyon’s trails system is intended to be a complete system for non-motorized use that connects to the City of Henderson’s Open Space and Trails Plan, the approved Anthem Trails System and the proposed McCullough Hills Trail. The system is intended to meet the needs of hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers by providing a range of opportunities for differing skill levels and abilities.

Major trail origins and destinations, linkages, connections and trail alignments as well as information on trail widths and surface type will be available for public review and discussion at the open house.

The three trails system alternatives are:
  • Alternative A (No Action) - BLM would not pursue the development nor designation of any additional trails in Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area.
  • Alternative B - BLM would pursue the development and designation of new trails throughout the northeast and northwest portions of the National Conservation Area (Dutchman Pass, Black Mountain and Hidden Valley areas.) This network would utilize some existing social trail routes, intermittent washes and the construction of new trails. Alternative B would include approximately 55 miles of trail.
  • Alternative C - This alternative would use the same network proposed in Alternative B, but would also incorporate the reclamation and designation of some unauthorized motorized routes into the non-motorized trails system. Alternative C would include approximately 65 miles of trail.
Representatives from BLM and the project planning team will be available for the duration of the open house to answer questions. No formal presentations will be made.
