White Pine Green Up

The White Pine Green Up began in 2002 and has just successfully completed it's sixth year.

White Pine Green Up is a collaborative effort by the City of Ely and the BLM to clean up the public lands.

The program allows White Pine County residents to leave at the landfill in Ely, free-of-charge, such items as old appliances, leftover construction materials and worn-out automobile tires. Two local businesses (Wheeler Machinery and Eldridge Auto Parts) voluntarily accept, again free-of-charge, used car and truck batteries.

In the first five years, the City of Ely Landfill has collected 730 tons of tires, 2315 tons of metal, 20 cars, 1649 refrigerators, 313 tons wood chips, 5355 yards of private construction and yard materials.

Many other districts have established this highly successful program within the state and nation-wide.

Already emptied of Freon, the refrigerators pictured below are part of a more than 20-foot high stack of appliances collected at the local landfill for recycling. The virtual mountain of used appliances was gathered through White Pine Green Up, a collaborative program aimed at reducing illegal dumping on public lands.
