BLM Wild Horse & Burro Program LogoSilver King Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather

Progress as of October 14, 2010

The BLM Ely District, Caliente and Schell field offices will initiate the Silver King Herd Management Area (HMA) Wild Horse Gather on Saturday, September 25, 2010, to gather and remove approximately 546 excess wild horses from in and around the Silver King HMA in Lincoln County, about 90 miles south of Ely, Nev.

The appropriate management level for the Silver King HMA is 60-128 wild horses, but there are currently more than 500 wild horses within the HMA.  The proposed gather is needed to remove excess wild horses to help prevent further deterioration of the range, achieve and maintain a thriving natural ecological balance and achieve and maintain healthy, viable wild horse populations.

Public Access to the Gather

The public is welcome to attend the Silver King gather and is encouraged to read the information below before visiting. There are scheduled observation days when visitors must sign up to attend, with a maximum number of 10 people able to attend. On observation days, visitors will be escorted to and from the site, with more intensive interaction with BLM staff and a more structured time schedule. On non-observation days, the public will not be escorted to and from the site, will have minimal interaction with BLM staff, and will be asked to stay in the same designated observation areas as those of observation days, for the safety of the humans and animals.

Scheduled observation days: Tuesday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 5, to provide the media and the public opportunities to view gather activities. The dates are subject to change depending upon weather and gather operations. Scheduled days provide visitors more opportunity to interact with BLM staff and will include escorted opportunities to observe the animals at the gather and holding corrals.

For more information or to sign up, call Chelsey Falge, BLM Ely District administrative clerk, at (775) 289-1800
