BLM Ely District firefighters are an integral part of an inter-disciplinary team charged with the mission of maintaining and restoring public land health.
When not actively engaged in wildland fire suppression or training, district fire crews assist with fuels reduction projects that are part of larger-scale watershed health maintenance and restoration projects, based on the watershed analysis process.
Whether conducting a fuels reduction project, or training for or suppressing a wildfire, wildland firefighting is physically demanding and mentally challenging.
A firefighter’s day begins early with a rigorous physical regimen that includes calisthenics, strength training and an up to six-mile run. Crews simulate real-time wildfire scenarios with equipment they will later use in an actual wildland fire event.
Salaries vary, depending on experience. Length of appointment varies, depending on agency needs and funding, but cannot exceed 180 days, excluding overtime and training, during a service year. A normal term of employment is from June through mid-September. Duty locations are Caliente, Ely and Pony Springs, Nev.
Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of employment. They must also be a U.S. citizen. Selected applicants must complete a pre-employment drug screening and physical examination prior to appointment, and are subject to random drug screen testing during their period of employment. Those selected for primary firefighter positions must also pass the "pack test" after entering on duty. This test consists of a three-mile walk over flat terrain carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less.
The district encourages anyone with a desire of joining the team to submit an application.
