Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will meet with the Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) three times in Nevada in fiscal year 2010: Feb 18, in Las Vegas; March 24-25, in Las Vegas; and Aug. 26, in Ely. All meetings are open to the public. The RAC advises and makes recommendations to the BLM on public land management. Discussion items will include, but are not limited to, renewable energy, Red Rock fees, off-highway vehicle casual use, Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act Round 11 and land-use planning. All meetings will include a general public comment period where the public may submit oral or written comments to the RAC. Each public comment period will begin at 8:15 a.m., Thursday, unless otherwise listed in each specific, final meeting agenda. The Feb. 18 and March 24-25 meetings will be held at the BLM Southern Nevada District Office, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Dr., in Las Vegas. The Aug. 26 meeting will be held at the BLM Ely District Office, 702 N. Industrial Way, in Ely. The Federal Land Policy and Management Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to involve the public in planning and discussion of issues related to management of BLM-administered public lands. The Mojave-Southern Great Basin RAC is one of three such councils in Nevada that accommodates this community participation directive. Represented on the council are commercial and non-commercial users that include elected officials and state agencies, environmental, livestock, mining, Native American, and wild horse and burro. The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
