National Public Lands Day 2009 to Celebrate Healthy Communities

Ely, Nev. – The public is invited to participate in National Public Lands Day (NPLD) scheduled Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Sacramento Pass Recreation Site on U.S. Highway 50, about 40 miles east of Ely.  This year’s theme is healthy communities.

Registration opens at 8 a.m.  Activities begin at 9 a.m.  Participants will help to construct and erect a kiosk, erect fencing and trail signs, and work on trails improvement projects.  An interpretive hike is scheduled for elementary school-age children.  Participants will receive a free NPLD tee shirt, while they last.  Mt. Wheeler Power will provide lunch.

NPLD is a success nationwide because of the collaboration between federal, state and local agencies, private organizations and individual volunteers.  The event is spearheaded each year by the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation.

Local participants this year include the Great Basin Institute, Mt. Wheeler Power, White Pine School District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District, Great Basin National Park and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Ely Ranger District.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Elizabeth Townley, BLM Ely District outdoor recreation specialist, at 775-289-1948 or elizabeth_townley@nv.blm.gov.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
