Caliente, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Caliente Field Office is seeking public input on a fuels reduction project that would protect a Lincoln County Telephone Company facility and power line on Chokecherry Mountain, about 25 miles southwest of Caliente, from catastrophic wildfire. The deadline to provide input is close of business, Friday, May 29, 2009. Under the proposed project, hand crews would use chainsaws to selectively remove pinyon-pine and juniper trees, and brush to up to 100 feet from the facility and on either side of the power line. The resulting biomass would be chipped and scattered to degrade naturally or collected and stacked for future disposal through the use of prescribed fire. To learn more or to provide input, contact Kyle Teel, BLM fire ecologist, at the BLM Caliente Field Office, P.O. Box 237, Caliente, NV 89008, or (775) 726-8117. |

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
