BLM Nevada News Disc Golf Offered as Local Outdoor Recreational Activity Ely, Nev. – Area residents and visitors alike are discovering the nine-hole disc golf course located at the Ward Recreation Area, on the north side of U.S. Highway 6, about six miles west of Ely. Disc golf is similar to traditional golf. The players, however, use a Frisbee-like flying disc instead of clubs and a ball, and the target, or hole, is frequently an elevated metal basket. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District constructed the mapped and signed course in June to provide for a wider range of local outdoor recreational opportunities that can be shared by people of all ages. The baskets and associated tee pads were installed in mostly previously-disturbed areas of the recreation area to minimize impacts. Existing roads and trails, and other linear disturbances were utilized as fairways for the same reason, as best as possible. The course is monitored and maintained. For more information or to obtain a course map, contact BLM Outdoor Recreation Specialist Kalem Lenard, at (775) 289-1800, or james_lenard@nv.blm.gov. -BLM- |
