BLM Reminds Hunters about White Pine County Wilderness

Ely, Nev. – Sportsmen drawing a game tag in White Pine County should determine if their hunting unit contains wilderness before leaving home, suggested a wilderness planner for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on Tuesday.

“Anyone who hasn’t hunted in the county for a couple of years might not be aware of the 15 recently established or expanded wilderness areas, or the regulations that provide for their use,” Dave Jacobson, BLM Ely District wilderness planner, said.  Regulations that include prohibitions on motor vehicle use, including the use of wheeled game carts.

Jacobson said hunting units 111, 114, 115, 121, 131, 221 and 222 contain wilderness as designated in the White Pine County Conservation, Recreation, and Development act of 2006.

Jacobson pointed out that wilderness allows for hiking, horseback riding and the use of pack stock.  “The positives of wilderness include preserved habitat and better wildlife forage, and pristine areas for camping, scouting and hunting."

To obtain maps of BLM-administered wilderness, contact the BLM Ely District Office at (775) 289-1800 or at www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/ely_field_office.html (click on Programs, and then Wilderness).  For Forest Service-managed wilderness, call the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Ely Ranger District at (775) 289-3031.
