BLM Issues Decision on White Pine Energy Station

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District Office announced its decision to grant rights of way for the White Pine Energy Station with a notice published in the Federal Register on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008.  The Record of Decision (ROD) issued for the coal-fired energy project near Ely will become final after a 30-day appeal period.

The decision approved the following actions:

  • Grant rights-of-way (ROWs) for power plant, electric transmission lines and substations, well field and water pipeline, electric distribution line, railroad spur, access roads and ancillary features.
  • Sale of the 1,281-acre power plant right-of-way to LS Power for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric power generating plant.
  • Authorize an off-site borrow area that would be constructed and operated by White Pine Energy Associates to supply earth and rock materials for project construction.
  • Authorize a seeding project that would be implemented by White Pine Energy Associates, a subsidiary of LS Power, to enhance grazing and wildlife values on 700 to 900 acres of public land in the Ely District.
