BLM Implementing Rx Burn in North Spring Valley

Weather conditions permitting, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District is scheduled on or about Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, to begin a prescribed burn in North Spring Valley, about 65 miles northeast of Ely, Nev.

The approximately 750-acre prescribed burn on the valley’s east bench is part of the nearly 22,360-acre North Spring Valley Habitat Improvement and Fuels Reduction Project that will improve watershed health and help protect North Spring Valley against the effects of catastrophic wildfire.

The North Spring Valley Habitat Improvement and Fuels Reduction Project combines prescribed fire with mechanical treatments to help restore wildland fire to its natural role in the ecosystem and provide for a diversity of native habitat that will benefit area wildlife, e.g., elk, mule deer and sage grouse.

Area residents may see smoke from the prescribed burn.  There will also be an increase in fire vehicle traffic in the area.

To learn more, contact Rob Frisk, BLM Ely District prescribed fire and fuels specialist, at (775) 289-1800.
