Wildfire in Mt. Grafton Wilderness Poses No Threat to Residents or Hunters
Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District reminds Ely area residents and hunters that they may occasionally see smoke through the weekend from the approximately 100-acre Sheep Creek Fire, in the Mt. Grafton Wilderness, about 45 miles south of Ely. No structures or private property are threatened. Public and firefighter safety is the top priority. There are no camping or road closures at this time.
The BLM is managing the fire in accordance with the BLM Ely District Managed Natural and Prescribed Fire Plan that identifies areas where allowing wildland fire to resume its natural role in the ecosystem would benefit the natural resources. The plan increases public and firefighter safety. It also increases native vegetative diversity and improves native wildlife habitat. The plan reduces the threat of catastrophic wildfire.
