Local Students Reveal Artistic Ability in NPLD Poster Contest

White Pine County’s young people do not lack artistic ability, if this year’s National Public Lands Day (NPLD) poster contest is an indication.

More than 200 elementary school-age children submitted a crayon-colored conception of recreation in the “Wildlands of White Pine County.” Twelve were selected Friday by the NPLD 2007 poster committee to receive a savings bond or gift certificate.

The poster contest is sponsored each year by Mt. Wheeler Power, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service. Mt. Wheeler provides the savings bonds and gift certificates.

Selected to receive an up to $50 savings bond were Jace Maynard, Lund School; Madison Panagopoulos, McGill Elementary; Delaynie Ward, David E. Norman Elementary (DEN); and Aymee Felix, DEN. Selected to receive a gift certificate valued at up to $20 were Malory Moore, McGill Elementary; Reagen Thomas, McGill Elementary; Austin Groesbeck, DEN; Ashlee Humphries, DEN; Tenacity Campbell, McGill Elementary; Kamrin Herring, McGill Elementary; Jonathan Doty, DEN; and Robyn Ewing, Baker School.

NPLD is Saturday, Sept. 29, at Camp Success, atop Success Summit, about 30 miles southeast of Ely. Registration opens at 8 a.m. Volunteer projects and environmental education activities begin at 9 a.m. Participants will receive a free NPLD 2007 Tee shirt, while supplies last. Mt. Wheeler Power will host lunch. Cowboy musician Elwyn Robison, a frequent performer at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, in Elko, Nev., will entertain.

NPLD is a success nationwide because of the collaboration between federal, state and local agencies, and private organizations and volunteers. The National Environmental Education & Training Foundation spearheads the annual event.

Participating locally this year are Mt. Wheeler Power, Great Basin Trails Alliance, White Pine School District, White Pine County, Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Division of Wildlife, BLM Ely Field Office, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Ely Ranger District, and Great Basin National Park.

To learn more about NPLD or to volunteer, contact David Jeppesen, BLM Ely District outdoor recreation specialist, at 289-1800.
