BLM Seeks Public Input on Barrick Gold Corporation Drilling Proposal
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely Field Office is asking for public input on a Barrick Gold Corporation proposal to conduct exploratory drilling at the reclaimed Yankee Mine, about 70 miles northeast of Ely, Nev. The 30-day public input period closes at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, 2007.
Under the proposal, Barrick Gold Corporation would assess the mine area for any remaining gold reserves. The project would consist of 144 track rig drill holes with associated roads, pads and sumps. There would be 6.8 miles of new and reopened road. The total disturbance would be 16.5 acres.
The Yankee Mine opened in the mid 1980s. The mine was closed in 2001 and reclamation completed by 2004.
