BLM Seeks Input on Proposed Ursine Wildland Urban Interface Project

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District wants to hear from the public on the proposed Ursine Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Project, scheduled for implementation in 2008. The deadline to provide input is Sunday, July 29, 2007.

The Ursine WUI project would help protect human life and property by selectively thinning pinyon-juniper from approximately 352 acres of the public lands located west of and adjacent to the community of Ursine, Nev., which has been identified as being at high risk for wildland fire in the Lincoln County Wildfire Risk/Hazard Assessment, conducted in 2005.

The BLM would selectively thin the pinyon-juniper using chainsaws or other type of mechanical equipment. The trees may be shredded, piled and burned, or sectioned for use as firewood by the public, depending on the treatment method selected. The project meets criteria established by the Healthy Forests Initiative and implements strategies outlined in the National Fire Plan.

For more information or to provide input, contact Kyle Teel, BLM Ely District fire ecologist, at the BLM Caliente Field Station, PO Box 237, Caliente, Nev., 89008, or call Teel at (775) 726-8117.
