BLM Prescribed Burns Renew Wildlife Habitat The nearly-completed Bull Canyon and Cherry Creek fuels reduction projects are already being hailed as 100-percent successful. “We’ve accomplished everything we set out to do,” Cody Coombs, BLM Ely District fuels program manager, said Thursday. The Bull Canyon Fuels Reduction Project, about 35 miles north of Ely, reduces hazardous fuels, regenerates aspen and white fir stands, improves habitat diversity and restores wildland fire to its natural role in the ecosystem. The Cherry Creek Fuels Reduction Project, about 50 miles north of Ely, also restores habitat diversity and allows wildland fire to return to its natural ecological role, which will benefit area wildlife such as sage grouse. The Cherry Creek project will also help to protect the community of Cherry Creek from catastrophic wildfire. Coombs said area residents and visitors to the White Pine community can expect to see smoke from the burns for about two more weeks.
