BLM Prescribed Burns Renew Wildlife Habitat The BLM Ely Field Office is scheduled this weekend and next week to complete prescribed burns near Bull Canyon, Bullwhack Summit and Cherry Creek. The fuels reduction projects will help to stabilize watersheds, restore the diversity of native habitat, regenerate Aspen and White Fire stands, and allow wildland fire to return to its natural role in the ecological process to the benefit of area wildlife, including sage grouse, elk and mule deer, as well as reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire. Bull Canyon is located about 35 miles north of Ely. Bullwhack Summit is located approximately 30 miles south of Ely. The community of Cherry Creek is located about 50 miles north of Ely. Area residents and passers-by may occasionally see smoke in the burn areas, as well as increased fire vehicle traffic.
