BLM Urges Caution on Back Country Roads

The BLM encourages hunters and other visitors to public lands to use caution when driving on back country roads in eastern Nevada and throughout the state.

Heavy spring run-off from record winter snowfalls and summer monsoon rains has made many back country roads in the Ely area impassable. Roads may be partially or completely washed-out. Culverts and drain pipes too may be damaged and sections of roadway undermined and subject to collapse under a vehicle’s weight.

The BLM encourages drivers to be alert to road conditions and drive accordingly. Wet roads should be avoided because of the risk of getting stuck.

Visitors to Nevada’s back country roads should carry water, extra food, a jacket and/or blanket, and shovel in their vehicle in case of emergency. Travelers are also encouraged to tell a friend or relative where they are going and when they plan to return.

Reports of road conditions are appreciated by the managing agencies. If drivers are unsure about the responsible agency, they may call the BLM Ely Field Office at (775) 289-1800.
