Rapid Snowmelt Prompts Caution on Back Country Roads

The Ely Times and BLM are encouraging people to use caution when driving on back country roads this Memorial Day weekend.

“Some roads may be partially or completely washed out because of heavy spring flooding caused by rapid snowmelt. We’re asking people to pay attention to the road conditions and drive accordingly,” Bill Wagers, BLM Ely District law enforcement ranger, said Tuesday.

Wagers suggested that recreationists avoid wet roads to prevent them from possible becoming stuck in the mud. He also suggested that people carry in their vehicle some water, extra food, a blanket or jacket and a shovel.

“…And let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return,” said Wagers.

The public is encouraged to report road conditions to the appropriate land management agency. If unsure, call the BLM Ely Field Office at (775) 289-1800
