BLM Prescribed Burns Benefit Wildlife The firefighter shown was taking part in a prescribed burn undertaken in early August near Bullwhack Summit, about 25 miles south of Ely. The 1,300-acre burn was one of two prescribed wildland fires ignited in August by the BLM Ely Field Office. The other project, consisting of about 400 acres, was located in Spring Valley, about 30 miles southeast of Ely. Both projects were successful in that they reduced the amount of ready-to-burn fuel and lessened the risk of catastrophic wildland fire while helping to regenerate native vegetation that will benefit area wildlife, for example sage grouse, a species proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act. In its natural role, wildland fire is beneficial to the landscape. Recognizing this, the BLM Ely District wields fire, as conditions warrant, under the Ely Managed Natural and Prescribed Fire Plan, as part of the Eastern Nevada Landscape Restoration Project.
