BLM Helps Students STEP Into A Career Seldom does a high school student have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in their field of interest. Not so for one White Pine High School student. Seventeen-year-old Ashley Tolbert is spending the summer helping the Bureau of Land Management Ely Field Office gather wild horses. Tolbert, under close supervision from BLM Ely Field Office wild horse and burro specialists, is allowed to perform specific tasks while she learns from professionals gathering horses from the Jakes Wash and White River Herd Management Areas. Tolbert, a horse owner and 2003 Lund Rodeo Queen, is one of several local high school students participating in the BLM’s Student Temporary Employment Program, or STEP. In STEP, selected students earn a salary while gaining valuable insight into potential careers in the BLM. To learn more about STEP, call Chris Hanefeld, BLM Ely Field Office public affairs specialist, at (775) 289-1842. For information about the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program, or to obtain an application, call toll-free (866) 4-MUSTANGS or visit the BLM Wild Horse and Burro website at www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov. Potential adopters can also call the National Wild Horse and Burro Center, at Palomino Valley, north of Reno, Nev., at (775) 475-2222.
