Help Celebrate Historic Preservation And Archeological Awareness Week Area residents are encouraged to help celebrate Historic Preservation and Archeological Awareness Week by participating in at least one of three events scheduled in May. White Pine Public Museum Day celebrations are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 8, at the White Pine Public Museum, in Ely, and approximately 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the McGill Historical Drug Store, in McGill. New this year at the White Pine Public Museum is the “animal room,” featuring the skeleton of a Short Face Bear, found in White Pine County. A slide show featuring various rock art sites located in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Ely Ranger District is scheduled at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, at the White Pine County Library. To learn more, contact Tom Flanigan, Ely Ranger District archeologist, at (775) 289-5124. Scheduled Saturday, May 15, are tours of specific sites within the Great Basin National Park, as well as the BLM Baker Archeological Site, the Forest Service’s Cleve Creek Rock Art Site and Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park. Traditional Native American foods will be provided by the Nevada Native American Cultural Society, at the Baker site only. Historic Preservation And Archeological Awareness Week events are sponsored by the non-profit Nevada Native American Cultural Society, White Pine Public Museum, Nevada Division of State Parks, BLM, Forest Service and National Park Service.
