BLM Volunteers Prove Their Value To Community BLM volunteers James Wood and Rollin Southwell are proof that volunteering helps local communities. Wood has since July 2003 been assisting at the White Pine Public Museum where he searches files for historic documents. Significant finds so far include payroll documents dating back to the 1870s. An author, Wood is also helping to map the key fossil sites in White Pine County. Rollin Southwell has for nearly a year been developing a guidebook that describes in detail the various routes involved in creating the Lincoln Highway, the nation’s first-ever cross-country automobile route. The guide and related maps will help the BLM and other public land management agencies, as well as the Lincoln Highway Association, locate and preserve this vital piece of our nation’s history. BLM Volunteers can participate in virtually every aspect of the agency’s activities, depending on the season. Archeology, recreation, range and wildlife are just four of the volunteer options available. Archeology volunteers might be found mapping ancient Native American rock art sites or ensuring that yesteryear’s ghost towns are safe from vandalism. Recreation volunteers help construct and maintain trails that will be used by the public. They also perform as campground hosts, greeting and educating the public about the environment. Range volunteers help monitor rangeland health and more. Who can volunteer? Anyone! Of course, individuals under 18 years old must have approval from their parent or guardian. Also, anyone who is not a U.S. citizen must possess a valid green card. To learn more about volunteering for the BLM, call Chris Hanefeld, BLM Ely Field Office volunteer coordinator, at (775) 289-1842.
