BLM Donated Computers Benefit Local School

Pahranagat Valley Elementary School students will soon be learning their Three R’s – reading, writing and ‘rithmetic – on Bureau of Land Management donated computers.

Roberta Hess, Pahranagat Valley Elementary School principal, said Monday that installation and set-up of the 16-plus computers, provided by the BLM Ely Field Office earlier this month, is nearly complete.

“We expect to have students on the keyboards within a week – they’re very excited,” said Hess.

According to Hess, approximately 100 students are enrolled in the school, from Kindergarten through fifth grade. She said they will use the computers to develop basic keyboarding and word processing skills.

“…And, of course, they’ll use the computers to further develop their reading, writing and arithmetic skills,” said Hess.

BLM Ely Field Office Warehouse Supervisor Jerry O’Donnell said the federal agency is required to upgrade its computer equipment periodically to keep current with changes in technology.

“When that happens, we’re allowed to use the opportunity to donate the previously-used equipment to local schools,” said O’Donnell. “I can’t imagine a better use for the equipment,” he said.
