Trails Plan Requires Immediate Local Participation Proponents of what eventually could be a county-wide trail system are pushing for a $100,000 grant, but need the community’s help to get it. Kalem Lenard is the coordinator for the White Pine County Trails Plan, a collaborative effort involving local entities, and state and federal agencies. The plan calls for a network of multiple-use trails extending across White Pine County, beginning with a single half-mile paved hiking and bicycling trail between the Nevada Northern railway depot and White Pine Public Museum. “Our ultimate goal is to provide people with an outdoor experience that benefits local economies while showing off the beauty of eastern Nevada,” Lenard said Monday. Lenard said the White Pine Chamber of Commerce is in the process of applying for a Regional Trails Grant valued at $100,000, but needs a minimum 20-percent match to be considered. “The match can be anything from monetary or material donations to volunteer labor or services,” Lenard told the Ely Times. The catch, according to Lenard, is that the grant application must be in Carson City by Friday, Feb. 27, to be considered. “Obviously, we’re looking for local businesses, civic organizations and private citizens to respond as quickly as possible,” Lenard said. Lenard encouraged potential donors to give him a call at (775) 289-5122, or stop by the Forest Service office, at 825 Ave. E, in Ely. |
